Eesti Pank starts to publish more detailed statistics for the external sector

On 8 September at 12.00 midday Eesti Pank will publish external sector statistics for the second quarter prepared using a new methodology, and this will affect the statistical tables for the balance of payments, international investment position and gross external debt.

For the first time, Eesti Pank will publish tables containing a lot of additional new information such as items of the financial account by positions, flows and non-technical changes, and the financial account divided by direct, portfolio and other investment, which makes it possible to get a picture of the transactions of a given period and their related income, and also of positions.

The new methodology for the balance of payments takes better account of the movement of production processes and labour force between countries, the international structure of companies, and complex new financial instruments. The changes are in line with updates to other important international statistical standards and the system of national and regional accounts. This means the new standards will make the balance of payments statistics more comparable with the national accounts.

European Union member states are starting to use the new statistics standards during 2014. Eesti Pank released the external sector statistics in the new format for the first time in June together with statistics prepared under the old methodology, but the data released today are only in the new form and all time series are being published using only the new methodology.

For more on the new standard see Adoption of the BPM6.

The new time series and additional tables can be found under External sector statistics.
