Mart Laar, Chair of the Eesti Pank Supervisory Board, presented the candidates for the new Supervisory Board to the Riigikogu for approval. The candidates are Kalev Kallo, Kaie Kerem, Enn Listra, Rein Minka, Jaanus Tamkivi, Liina Tõnisson and Urmas Varblane.

Mr Laar noted that politicians from the parliament made up a smaller proportion of the proposed new board than has been the case in the past. He explained his conviction that the new board will be able to manage its duties. “The make-up of the board is designed for sustainability and the board will be able to handle all its current responsibilities and to carry out the oversight function that it has been given.”

The new names submitted by Mr Laar are Kaie Kerem, Rein Minka and Jaanus Tamkivi.

Kaie Kerem graduated in econometrics from the University of Tartu and gained her doctorate in economics in 1974. She is Director of the Department of Finance and Economics at the Tallinn School of Economics and Business Administration at Tallinn University of Technology.

Rein Minka graduated in economics from the University of Tartu and is a former Deputy Governor of Eesti Pank.

Jaanus Tamkivi graduated from the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute in industrial and civil engineering, and is a member of the parliament.

Under the Eesti Pank Act the Riigikogu appoints the members of the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank for a term of five years at the proposal of the Chair of the Board. The authority of the current Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank will end on 17 February this year. Mart Laar is Chair of the Eesti Pank Supervisory Board until 12 June 2018.
