Eesti Pank is issuing a two-euro coin in 2019 dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Song Celebration, and the design for the coin will be chosen in a design competition for children that started on Saturday.

“The tradition of Song Celebrations has great meaning for Estonians as it has united different generations, young and old. In the spirit of the anniversary of the state, we want to give children the chance to make a special gift that will end up in the wallets of people across Estonia and across Europe”, said Ardo Hansson, Governor of Eesti Pank.

A drawing competition for children and young people up to the age of 19 will be held from 23 September to 22 November to choose the design for the coin. Eesti Pank is organising the competition together with the children’s television programme Lastejaam and the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration Foundation.

The final round in the selection of the overall winner will be an online public vote and the winning design will be used by Eesti Pank for the design of the two-euro coin. Eight designs will be submitted for the public vote, which will be held in spring 2018.

The winner will be a design for the reverse of the coin that symbolises the traditions of the Song Celebration and marks the 150th anniversary of the song festivals. This will be the first two-euro coin in Europe to be designed by a child.

The public vote will also choose the most popular design in each of the four age groups, and the winner in each group will get an iPad Pro tablet computer with a stylus as a prize. The age groups are: pre-school to 3rd year; 4th-6th year; 7th-9th year; 10th year and above up to age 19.

The teacher or other supervisor whose children submit the most drawings will receive a 1000-euro voucher from Eesti Pank to buy art materials with. An explanatory briefing for supervisors and art teachers will be held in the museum of the central bank on 6 October at 15.00. The briefing will be broadcast live on the Eesti Pank YouTube channel and later posted as a video file.

Design competition for children for the ‘Song Celebration 150’ two-euro coin
Conditions in brief

Eesti Pank is issuing a two-euro coin in 2019 dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Song Celebration. A drawing competition ‘Song Celebration 150’ for children and young people up to the age of 19 will be held to choose the design for the coin, and the final round will be a public vote. Eesti Pank will base the design of a two-euro coin on the winner of the public vote, and the coin will be used by people across Estonia and across Europe.

The public vote will also choose the most popular design in each of the four age groups, and the winner in each group will get an iPad Pro tablet computer with a stylus as a prize. The runner-up in each age group will win a portable speaker.

Eesti Pank is organising the competition together with the children’s television programme Lastejaam and the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration Foundation. The winner will be a design for the national side of the coin that symbolises the traditions of the Song Celebration and marks the 150th anniversary of the song festivals. The common side of the two-euro coin shows a map of Europe together with the number 2, and the national side shows the country that has issued the coin. A design is needed for the national side.

CONDITIONS OF THE COMPETITION

• The competition is open to children and young people up to the age of 19 who are citizens or residents of Estonia. This means that children living in Estonia with any citizenship and children living abroad with Estonian citizenship are all eligible to enter.
• Each entrant can submit up to three designs.
• Each entry should be a picture or design on the theme of ‘Song Celebration 150’. There should also be space for the word ‘EESTI’ and the number ‘2019’.
• Drawings should be submitted in a circle of 14-cm diameter drawn on a piece of A4 paper. A page with a circle of the right size for drawing can be printed from HERE [2]. The circle can also be drawn by hand on a piece of A4 paper.
• The drawing can be black and white or colour.
• The page with the drawing should be sent to Eesti Pank unfolded and in a sealed envelope marked with the words “Drawing competition Song Celebration 150”.
• The designer’s first name and surname, age, school and school year should be written in capital letters on the back of the page with the drawing. The name, telephone number and email address of a parent or guardian should also be marked. If the design has had a supervisor, please also give their name.
• The deadline for the submission of designs is 22 November 2017. Drawings can be brought in a sealed envelope to the Eesti Pank museum, Tuesday to Friday 12.00-17.00 and Saturday and Sunday 11.00-16.00, or sent by post with a postmark no later than 22 November 2017 to:

If several children from one school or one class are entering the competition, all of their entries can be sent to the Eesti Pank museum in a single envelope.

TIMETABLE FOR THE COMPETITION

Entries can be submitted for the competition until 22 November 2017.

The entries will be divided into four age groups:

• pre-school to 3rd year
• 4th-6th year
• 7th-9th year
• 10th year and above up to age 19

The jury will select the best two designs in each age group from among those submitted, and these will be put up for a public vote on the website of the children’s television programme Lastejaam.
The public vote will be held between 12 February and 4 March 2018.

The drawing that gets the most votes in the public vote will be turned into the reverse side of the two-euro coin in 2019. A stylish iPad Pro with Apple Pencil stylus will be given to the best design in each age group. The runner-up in each age group will win a portable speaker.
