The first 8500 coin cards with the two-euro coin dedicated to Sipsik, the popular character from children’s literature, have sold out. Eesti Pank will put a second release of coin cards on sale in August.

The two-euro coins for Sipsik can be bought individually or in rolls from the Eesti Pank museum shop, and will be given out as change in shops.

A total of one million Sipsik coins were minted, of which 17,000 are packaged on a coin card. Eesti Pank originally produced 8500 coin cards, but interest has been extraordinarily high in both the coin and the coin card. The central bank consequently decided before the coin entered circulation to produce another set of 8500 coin cards. The additional cards will go on sale in August.

“The amount of interest in the coin and the coin card has been quite extraordinary and we are very pleased to see how warmly Sipsik has been welcomed. We would like to thank everyone who came to buy a Sipsik coin or a coin card and waited patiently for them in the long queue. We apologise to those who have not yet managed to get one of the coin cards”, said Rait Roosve, Head of the Cash and Infrastructure Department at Eesti Pank.

Eesti Pank will announce the exact date when the second set of coin cards will go on sale in a press release, on its website and in social media. Eesti Pank has so far issued about 700,000 Sipsik coins into circulation.

Two-euro commemorative coins with a special design are valid as legal tender throughout the euro area and they enter into circulation through shops.

Commemorative coins are two-euro coins that are released into circulation, and that have a special commemorative design on the national side in place of the usual national design to commemorate a particular significant national or European event or topic. The coins are all legal tender throughout the euro area, so they can be used for payments like any other euro coin.
