Eesti Pank is calling for designs for a silver coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Seto traditional folkloric singer Anne Vabarna. Designs can be submitted for the competition until 12.00 noon on 25 March. The coins will be issued into circulation in 2027.
The silver coin marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anne Vabarna will be the second in a series of collector coins dedicated to Outstanding Estonian Women, highlighting the role of Anne Vabarna as a promoter of traditional folklore and Seto cultural heritage in the history of Estonian culture. The coin is part of a coin series dedicated to people who have been important in Estonian culture and for the Estonian state. The idea behind the Outstanding Estonian Women series, launched in 2025, is to celebrate those women who have had a major influence on the development of Estonian society.
Anne Vabarna was one of the great Estonian folk singers, and the songs she created are an important part of the intangible heritage of Estonia. The old style of polyphonic singing still survives today in Setomaa in the 21st century, having adapted to cultural changes over time.
The prize for the winner of the design competition is 3000 euros, with the second placed design receiving 2000 euros, and the third placed 1000. Individuals and groups of designers are welcome to participate in the design competition.
