At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank decided to propose to President Kersti Kaljulaid that Madis Müller be appointed as the next Governor of the central bank.

In a secret ballot in the middle of February the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank elected Deputy Governor Madis Müller as candidate to be the next Governor. Candidates for the position must undergo background security checks by the Estonian Internal Security Service. The security service has announced that Madis Müller already had access to state secrets at the level of the post, and so no further security control was required for him.

The term of office of Ardo Hansson, the present Governor of Eesti Pank, will end on 6 June this year, and the new Governor will start work on 7 June. The law allows the Governor of Eesti Pank to be appointed to office for a term of seven years and only for one term.
