The internationally renowned economist Barry Eichengreen is to give a lecture at Eesti Pank

Barry Eichengreen, Professor of Economics at the University of California, will give a public lecture on “Ragnar Nurkse and the International Financial Architecture” on 12 January at 14.00 in the Independence Hall of Eesti Pank. This lecture is dedicated to the economist Ragnar Nurkse.
Professor Eichengreen’s lecture will discuss Ragnar Nurkse’s book “International Currency Experience: Lessons of the Inter-War Period”, published in 1944, and will consider how relevant the conclusions of the book are today. The lecture will mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Ragnar Nurkse.
The lecture will be held in English and participation is by invitation only. The presentation will be published later on the Eesti Pank website as part of the Eesti Pank working paper series.
Barry Eichengreen is a Professor of Economics at the University of California and an internationally renowned economist and commentator, who has written widely on the international economy and monetary systems. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in the USA and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in the United Kingdom. Professor Eichengreen is the convener of the Bellagio Group of academics and economists and chair of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Peterson Institute of International Economics. He has received several awards and honours for his work, and in 2011 he was named as one of the 100 Leading Global Thinkers.
During his visit to Estonia, Professor Eichengreen will meet with the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank and with Estonian researchers and academics.
Background Information
Professor Ragnar Nurkse was an economist from Estonia who gained international recognition in the 1940s and 1950s. His research has provided valuable information, lessons and rules on monetary policy issues, international trade, international policy coordination and development economics.
Eesti Pank started the regular lecture series dedicated to Professor Nurkse, a world-renowned Estonian economist, in 2007. The previous lectures have been given by Vice-President of the European Commission Siim Kallas, Governor of Suomen Pankki Erkki Liikanen, Governor of Sveriges Riksbank Stefan Ingves, former Governor of the German Bundesbank Professor Axel A Weber, and former Polish Minister of Finance and Governor of the Polish central bank Leszek Balcerowicz.
With this series of lectures Eesti Pank aims to provide room for exciting discoveries and new arguments that would contribute to a better understanding of the challenges ahead for the global and Estonian economies.
