At Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Eesti Pank Supervisory Board, Eesti Pank Governor Madis Müller gave board members the regular review of the state of the economy in the euro area and in Estonia. Economist Peeter Luikmel also presented the economic position of Estonia’s neighbours.
Members of the Supervisory Board discussed changes to the statute of the central bank, and reviewed the procedures for nominating candidates for Governor of Eesti Pank. This is a preparatory step taken so that the Supervisory Board would be ready to choose the candidate for the next Governor of Eesti Pank this year. By law it is the Supervisory Board of the central bank that chooses the candidate for Governor of the bank, and the candidate is then confirmed in office by the President of the Republic of Estonia. The term of the Governor of Eesti Pank is restricted by law to seven years and a Governor may not be appointed to office for more than one consecutive term. The term of office of current Governor of Eesti Pank Madis Müller ends in June 2026. Candidates for the position must undergo background security checks by the Estonian Internal Security Service before being appointed to office, which can take up to three months.
The next meeting of the Eesti Pank Supervisory Board will be on 13 May.
