“The approaching anniversary of the Republic of Estonia is a significant milepost on Estonia’s road to independence and a historical event that touches every Estonian. As a central bank we are making a notable contribution to the celebration of this anniversary in the form of four coins that will be publicly available by February 2018 at the latest. Two of the coins are circulating coins, and this is better for getting the message about our special date to many other Europeans”, said Ardo Hansson, Governor of Eesti Pank.
The gold coin with a nominal value of 100 euros dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia has a design featuring the Estonian national flower, the cornflower, and the oldest Estonian geometric design, in which the symbols represent perfect happiness, development and balance. The coin was designed by Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets, and 3000 of the coins will be minted.
The silver coin with a nominal value of 100 euros dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia has a design featuring the outline of Estonia in blue, black and white on a globe. In the sky above is a line of poetry by Kristjan Jaak Peterson “Is not the language of this land singing in the wind, or rising to heaven, looking for eternity?” The coin was designed by Margus Kadarik and Toomas Niklus, and 7000 of the coins will be minted.
The two-euro coin with the special design dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia features the official national logo for the jubilee, which can be read as the numbers 18 and 100, linking the year the state was founded with today. The coin was designed by the concept and design agency Identity OÜ. The coin is intended to symbolise the people of Estonia, and so 1,317,800 coins will be minted to match the population of Estonia on 1 January 2017 according to data from Statistics Estonia.
The two-euro coin with the special design for the centenary of the Baltic states will enter circulation on 31 January 2018. The design of the coin shows the common past, present and future of the Baltic states as a single plaited braid. The coin was designed by the Lithuanian designer Justas Petrulis, who designed a coin for the first time. The design for the coin was chosen through a public vote. The same design of the coin will be issued into circulation in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Eesti Pank will issue 500,000, the Latvian central bank 512,000 and the Lithuanian central bank one million coins.
Eesti Pank will announce the selling price of the collector coins and collector items and the exact timings of sales at the start of next year.

Further information:
The competition to design the silver and gold coins for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia was held in two rounds. In the first round of the public competition, 13 complete designs for the silver and gold coins were entered. The panel convened by Eesti Pank decided to hold a second round where six designers or groups of designers who had previously successfully designed a collector coin were invited to submit designs for the coins. The designs received were assessed by the panel, which selected the three best designs for the gold and silver coins, from which the Eesti Pank Supervisory Board chose the eventual winner. The Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank confirmed the winning designs in the design competitions for the gold and silver coins dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia on 19 June 2017.
