The Eesti Pank Supervisory Board approved the design by Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets for the two-euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica.

The two-euro commemorative coin for the bicentenary of the discovery of Antarctica will enter circulation at the end of January 2020. The design shows the ship Vostok in which Admiral von Bellingshausen sailed around the world.

The discovery is linked to Estonia because one of the first men to see Antarctica in 1820, who documented the event, was the Baltic German seafarer Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen, who was born in Saaremaa.

The artists Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets have previously designed the gold coin dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia, a coin folder in 2011, and the silver collector coin for the Song Celebration in 2009.
