The Vice President of the European Central Bank will deliver a public lecture at Eesti Pank

Mr Luis de Guindos, Vice-President of the European Central Bank, will deliver a lecture on “Europe: challenges and the path forward” in the Eesti Pank Independence Hall at 11.00 on 26 March. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Governor of Eesti Pank Madis Müller. The event will be held in English.
The lecture by Vice President of the European Central Bank Luis de Guindos will focus on changes in the international circumstances and the concerns that mounting geopolitical tensions are prompting about the European economy, which has so far proven resilient in the face of these pressures.
The lecture will be followed by a discussion between Luis de Guindos and Madis Müller about which risks will most threaten the European economy in the coming years and how it can be made more resilient to crises. The discussion will also touch on competitiveness, the impact of an energy price shock on inflation and monetary policy, risks to the financial sector, simplification of the rules for banking, and the future of Europe more broadly.
Luis de Guindos has a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors, and he has been a Vice President of the European Central Bank since 2018. Prior to that he was Minister of Economy and Competitiveness in Spain, in which role he played a major part in reforming the financial sector after the financial crisis of 2008. He has also had an international career in the financial sector.
The lecture is part of a series of lectures dedicated to the economist Professor Ragnar Nurkse. Professor Ragnar Nurkse was an economist from Estonia who gained international recognition in the 1940s and 1950s. Eesti Pank started the lecture series dedicated to Professor Nurkse in 2007.
