Eesti Pank will present a silver collector coin dedicated to the Hansa town of Viljandi in Viljandi Raekoja Park at 13.00 on 8 June. The presentation event will be opened by Governor of Eesti Pank Madis Müller, and designer of the coin Elisabeth Juusu and Major of Viljandi Madis Timpson will also speak.

The silver coin has a nominal value of eight euros and will be on sale for 40 euros. Those wishing to buy the coin can do so after the presentation between 13.30-16.30 in the Viljandi Raekoja Park. Sales of the coin will start on the same day at 13.00 in the Eesti Pank Museum in Tallinn at Estonia pst 11 and in the Omniva online shop. The coin will be on sale from 10 June in Eesti Post post offices that sell collector coins and other Eesti Pank collector products.

The coin for Hanseatic Viljandi was designed by Elisabeth Juusu, a student of graphic design at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The design on the coin brings together symbols for grain, fish, candles and a merchant’s boat.

A total of 4000 coins will be minted. The proof quality silver (Ag 925) collector coin weighs 28.28 grams and is 38.61 mm in diameter.

The collector coin for Hanseatic Viljandi is part of a series of coins dedicated to the Estonian Hanseatic towns. In February 2017, Eesti Pank released silver and gold coins dedicated to Hanseatic Tallinn.

What are collector coins?

The silver coin dedicated to Hanseatic Viljandi is a collector coin. Collector coins are mostly made of precious metals and commemorate important events or people for the issuing country. Collector coins are only legal tender in the country of issue, though they are not intended for circulation but rather for collecting or giving as gifts. Their price is usually higher than their nominal value.

What does proof quality mean?

The proof is the quality of the coin. Proof quality means that the coin has been specially made and the quality of it has been checked repeatedly during the minting process. Proof quality coins stand out for having a brilliant reflective surface and a matte surface.
